Traits

Ash Form. The Ashen Creeper can fully conceal itself in ash, sand, or snow. While in this state, noticing it requires a DC 17 Wisdom (Perception) check, and it counts as Hidden.

Cinder Burst. When the Ashen Creeper breaks from a Hidden state to attack, ash bursts around it. Every enemy within 5 feet of the Ashen Creeper makes a DC 13 Constitution save. Failure: It is Blinded until the end of its next turn.

Heat Shimmer. Attacks made against the Ashen Creeper from more than 10 feet away are made with Disadvantage (the heated air distorts vision).

Actions

Searing Claw. Melee Attack Roll: +5, reach 5 ft. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) Slashing damage plus 4 (1d8) Fire damage.

Bonus Actions

Sink. The Ashen Creeper burrows into ash/sand: it moves at its Burrow speed and takes the Hide action.

How to Use

Scene: A volcanic ash field. Knee-deep gray ash. Visibility is short (the hot air shimmers). The party has to cross.

This is the most controlling of the three Lurkers — because Cinder Burst blinds party members.

Loop:

  1. It bursts from the ash. Cinder Burst → everyone within 5 feet makes a DC 13 CON save or is blinded.
  2. The blinded party already can't hit it from range due to Heat Shimmer.
  3. It attacks, then burrows into the ash with Sink.
  4. The party is blind, the enemy is invisible, and they're about to walk into another ambush.

This is a "blindness loop" design. A party that stays blinded can't do anything.

How the party wins: Protection against Blindness/Deafness, fooling its Tremorsense (fly! the Ashen Creeper can't see a flying target), area spells (Fireball into the ash field — but it has Fire Resistance, Thunderwave is better), or getting out of the ash.

Critical weakness: Tremorsense is 60 feet and Blind Beyond that. A flying creature, 10 feet above the ground, is completely invisible to the Ashen Creeper. A party using Levitate/Fly crushes it. This is a deliberate flaw.
