Aurumvorax
Traits
Golden Hide. The Aurumvorax's pelt is tougher than plate armor. When it is struck by a nonmagical weapon, that weapon takes a non-permanent nick: its damage die drops one step (d12→d10→d8→d6→d4) until the next Short Rest. A weapon can drop at most two steps this way.
Metal Scent. It can smell the location of precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, mithral, adamantine) within 120 feet — even inside a chest or buried underground.
Relentless (Recharge after a Short or Long Rest). When the Aurumvorax takes damage that would reduce it to 0 HP, it instead drops to 1 HP.
Actions
Multiattack. It makes one Bite attack and two Claw attacks. If all three hit the same target, that target becomes Grappled (escape DC 15) and the Aurumvorax can use Rend.
Bite. Melee Attack Roll: +7, reach 5 ft. Hit: 15 (2d10 + 4) Piercing damage. If the target is wearing metal armor or carrying a metal shield, it also takes 7 (2d6) extra damage.
Claw. Melee Attack Roll: +7, reach 5 ft. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) Slashing damage.
Rend. Automatic Hit: A creature Grappled by the Aurumvorax takes 22 (4d8 + 4) Slashing damage. This target has Disadvantage on checks made to escape the Aurumvorax's Grapple.
Bonus Actions
Devour Metal. The Aurumvorax swallows a nonmagical metal object (a weapon, a piece of armor, a pile of coins) within 5 feet. It gains 30 (8d6) temporary Hit Points.
It can't eat magic items — it doesn't touch them, and instinctively avoids them. This means the Aurumvorax doesn't destroy magic items; it only consumes ordinary metal.
How to Use
The Aurumvorax is a solitary hunter and a war of attrition. AC 19 + HP 149 + Resistance + Relentless = a long, grinding fight.
Golden Hide is the key mechanic: if the party isn't using magic weapons, their weapons dull. The longer the fight goes, the lower their damage gets. This sends the party a clear message:
If you don't have a magic weapon, you can't beat this thing down.
But — watch Devour Metal. The Aurumvorax doesn't eat magic items. This is deliberate: unlike the Disenchanter, this creature doesn't touch a player's earned items. It only eats ordinary metal. So the party doesn't fear "I'm going to lose my treasure," only "my weapon isn't working." These two feel very different.
Encounter: for a 4-person Lv8 party, a single Aurumvorax = 3,900 XP, budget (Medium) 1,700×4 = 6,800. Low–Medium. If you're using it as a boss, add an environmental hazard: a narrow tunnel (getting surrounded), a collapsing ceiling, or the pits it has dug (Burrow 20 ft.).
Balance Note
Relentless is strong but recharges on a Short Rest — so it triggers once per fight. This creates the "we thought it was dead but it got up" moment, which is the essence of the Aurumvorax's legendary toughness.
Golden Hide's two-step cap matters — a weapon never becomes completely useless. A d12 greataxe becomes d8 at worst. Annoying, but not devastating.
