Traits

Thorn Mantle. A creature that makes a melee attack against the Thornplate Beast from within 5 feet — whether it hits or misses — takes 5 (2d4) Piercing damage.

Rooted Stance. The Thornplate Beast can't be made Prone and can't be forcibly moved.

Bramble Wake. Squares the Thornplate Beast passes through become Difficult Terrain (thorns grow, 1 minute). An enemy who starts its turn in that area takes 3 (1d6) Piercing damage.

Actions

Multiattack. Makes two Gore attacks.

Gore. Melee Attack Roll: +7, reach 10 ft. Hit: 15 (2d10 + 4) Piercing damage. If the target is Large or smaller it makes a DC 15 Strength save. Failure: The target is pushed 10 feet back and becomes Prone.

Thorn Volley (Recharge 5–6). The Thornplate Beast launches its thorns. Every creature in a 30-foot cone makes a DC 15 Dexterity save.

  • Failure: 21 (6d6) Piercing damage, and the target's Speed is reduced by 10 feet (1 minute, thorns embedded in its legs).
  • Success: Half damage, Speed not reduced.

Reactions

Retributive Spines. When the Thornplate Beast is hit by an attack, if the attacking creature is within 10 feet: that creature makes a DC 15 Dexterity save. Failure: It takes 9 (2d8) Piercing damage.

How to Use

The Thornplate Beast is the Soldier that punishes approach. The other two hold you; this one pushes you away — but if you move away, Bramble Wake hurts you too.

Paradox design:

  • Approach → Thorn Mantle (5 damage/attack) + Retributive Spines (9 damage) = every melee attack of yours costs 14 damage
  • Retreat → Thorn Volley (21 damage, cone) + Bramble Wake (Difficult Terrain)
  • Stay → Gore pushes you back and makes you Prone

Every option is bad. This is good design — the party has to find a strategy, not just "hit it."

Solution: Fire. It has Vulnerability. Fireball halves it. Or attack from range — Thorn Volley is on Recharge, it doesn't come every turn.

Combination:

Thornplate Beast (Soldier) + 2× Artillery (e.g. Wood Elf archers)

The party can't approach the Thornplate, the archers pound it from behind. The party has to get past the Thornplate, but getting past it hurts.
